Tim Merriam – 5th Degree Black Belt

I began my training at Whole Armor Martial Arts in January 1998. Up until that point I was training at a local gymnastics club along with both of my siblings. At about the time I was ready for competitive gymnastics, my folks heard about WAMA through a friend from church. They gave me the choice to continue in gymnastics or to start martial arts. I hadn’t the slightest idea what martial arts entailed. In fact at the mention of the word “art” my first thought was that I’d be needing a canvas and paint brush. Yikes! But I knew for certain that neither sibling would be involved, and on that factor alone began a significantly more fulfilling pursuit in the martial arts.

After over 20 years into my life long journey, I have earned a 5th degree Black Belt in Karate-do and a 1st degree Black Belt in Iaido. Ranks aside, Whole Armor Martial Arts has been instrumental in shaping my character and a vital factor in my transition from childhood to adulthood.

With the retirement of my teacher, Mr. Ron Hagelganz, I have been blessed to become the Head Instructor at our school. It is my prayer to continue to point students to Jesus at every class.

Outside of the dojo, I am a CPA (currently inactive) and lead the accounting team within my family business. I also enjoy classic cars (primarily British) and Harleys. Most recently, I’ve become interested in diet and nutrition and am often coming up with crazy foods in the kitchen.
